David Joy gives an illustrated talk about his newly published book

There are hundreds of books on woods and trees, but none that fully sets the subject in the context of the unique landscape and glorious scenery of the Yorkshire Dales. Local author David Joy decided to rectify this omission. The resulting book provides both visual enjoyment and an absorbing read, giving the opportunity to discover much previously little known.

The wide-ranging content embraces the many changes in Dales woodland down the centuries, portrays the best-known species of trees and takes a detailed look at six woods. Two of these are in Upper Wharfedale – Strid Wood at Bolton Abbey and the wonderful Grass Wood just north of Grassington. Trees may be our longest-lasting form of life but much depends on the enthusiasms of those who plant them and look after them. They are not neglected in this book, which reflect the personalities of those involved and the challenges they have met.

A former editor of The Dalesman, David is the author of more than 50 books – most of them on Yorkshire. He has been awarded the MBE for services to the countryside. Discover Your Woods has been published in association with the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, which in recent years has tirelessly worked with partners to achieve a much-needed increase in the area’s tree cover. The author will be signing copies of the book at the talk with all proceeds from sales being donated to the work of the Trust.
